2024--day 4

The day started in Lawton, OK with a quick trip to Norman for visits to the Atmospheric Radar Research Center (Casey's old stomping grounds) and the National Weather Center.  Always interesting stuff to see there, such as these mobile radars.

While waiting for lunch (pretty damn good pizza) we went across the street to see someone about horses.  While there I saw the Oklahoma Wildman for whom the phrase No Shirt, No Service need not apply.  Wish I was able to get a picture, but you're better off without the visual.

After lunch we must have taken a wrong turn and wound up in Reykjavik, judging by these gas prices:

A good chunk of the rest of the day was spent waiting in Calumet, OK at the Cherokee Trading Post, the little sister of Wall Drug.  Here is their mascot.

I was astounded as to how s/he was able to snooze in the heat.

It was one of those days where we appeared to be in the right place at the right time, as the conditions were prime for significant thunderstorms, but we made the decision to push southward.  This turned out to be a good call, as isolated cells began to pop. In the end, however, the visually impressive storm began to separate vertically and ultimately weakened.  Still managed to get some good pictures, and even got treated to a great lightning display on the way to and from dinner.

Wound up for a second night in Lawton.  Probably a couple hundred miles of driving today, short by comparison.  Hope you are enjoying this blog.
