2018--day 8

Tuesday, 29 May 2018

One of the perils of driving so much is the infrequence of my updating this tome.  Maybe it's not really a peril.  In any case, we left Colby and started south for Dodge City, KS (where conventional wisdom tells you to get out of).  We're not conventionally wise, I guess.

Launched another sounding in Dodge City to sample the environment.  Afterward, we chased one supercell through Oklahoma for several hours.  At times the inflow was strong enough to knock you off your feet.  While this cell never produced a tornado that we could see, at various points in time you can see mammatus clouds, the striations associated with the supercell's rotation, wall clouds, and other highlights.  We also learned that contrary to conventional wisdom, Oklahoma is not as flat as you'd suspect.  Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here's a Bible's worth.

The day ended after a subpar meal at a sub-serviced Sonic somewhere in Oklahoma.  After a drenching rain on the way to Perry, we unloaded the vans only to discover that one of our driver's bags decided that the billboards were right and needed to stay behind in Colby.  Guess we're were ending tomorrow night?  (474 miles)
