2018--day 2

Wednesday, 23 May 2018

After much too little sleep, we left Sparta, WI around 7 am local time, with the intention of heading west to South Dakota.  Nothing especially phenomenal expected to brew in the atmosphere, but we're hopeful that things will pop.  The trip is taking us across southern Minnesota along I90.  Saw a sign advertising the SPAM Museum ("14,000 square feet of square meat"), but alas didn't stop.

Somewhere between Blue Earth (sorry, the dirt is plain old brown) and Fairmont, I managed to get a picture of what appears to be elevated convection north of a warm front.  Nothing chasable, but still interesting.

After lunch in Sioux Falls, SD, we decided to head west toward Rapid City, some 300+ miles away.  Along the way we stopped west of Plankinton we saw a developing supercell BEHIND us (near Parkston, to our southeast).  It was warned on (severe thunderstorm) and included some decent rotation, so we stopped at a rest area to take pictures.  We debated on whether or not to reverse course and chase it, but decided to keep on keepin' on (to the west).

After a bit we decided to stop in Oacomo to launch a weather balloon to determine the local conditions and determine whether or not to keep going west or stay closer to 'home.  There were storms around, but none close enough to go after.  We waited for a while for things to fire near us, but no soap.  We abandoned our plans for Rapid City, and decided to head east for tomorrow's chase.

Near Chamberlain we stopped to take some pictures in a park near the Missouri River.

The end of the day found us back in Sioux Falls.  On the way east we stopped near Alexandria for this sunset.  Final tally: 614 miles.  Good (earlier) night!
