2015--Day 5

The day started leisurely with a briefing and supply run in Rapid City.  There are two potential areas for severe today, to our east and to our south.  Obviously we can't be in two places at once, so we ate lunch and waited in a wonderfully-smelling truckstop--nothing like the melange of diesel, BO and sewage.  Great day yesterday, hopefully today will be equally great (or at least approaching).

Some interesting observations about Rapid City:

1. One can purchase real alcohol (rum, vodka, etc.) in Wal Mart;

2. Politicians still advertise using banners behind planes;

3. Drivers and passengers in a car with kids in the back can stop in the middle of a busy road and have a slapfight (this really happened, directly in front of us).  Postscript to the story: the driver (male) got out of the car and walked past us, flipping us off in the process.  Stay classy, Rapid City.

Around 3 pm local, some storms developed to the south and west of us in Nebraska and Wyoming, and so we've decided to head south.  Made it back to Chadron in time to see a well-defined storm with rotation.  Saw several wall clouds as well.

Around 5:30 local time we intercepted a supercell north of Alliance.  Beautiful structure and dust from the RFD (and some great lightning), but no tornadoes at this time.  Other cells are developing to the east as well.  After a bit, we decided that the eastern storms were not worthy, so we're heading back to the west and south toward Scottsbluff, where we have new storms with warnings coming together.  Unfortunately, our quick pit stop in Alliance was stymied by a one-holer bathroom, turning our pee and flee into more of a process.  The storms continued to move east from Scottsbluff toward Sidney, but we're getting great visuals of a beautiful storm down there.  Whether or not we make it there before it moves away or falls apart remains to be seen.

Just west of Broadwater, NE, we stopped around 8 pm local time as we were about to split two storms.  While we waited, I GOT MY MOTHERSHIP, among other beautiful features.

And it got better from there, further on down the road in Dalton...

As we moved back toward Sidney, we decided to corepunch a modest cell.  We encountered a bit of rain and hail ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 inch.  After an interesting dinner at a local bar where we helped a young lady celebrate her legality, we called it a night.  Final tally: 343 miles.
