Day One

Today started way too early, no sleep. Left for Buffalo at 3:15 am after being awake for 18 hours. No problems with flight, and even our gates were close in Atlanta for the first time in recorded history. Major hassles trying to find the vans in downtown Denver. Finally left for the road at around 3 pm MDT. Traveled up I76 to western Nebraska up US 385. Drove about 450 miles yesterday.

We stopped at each state crossing to take pictures of welcome signs—we’re such geeks. Also killed about 10,000 bugs with our windshield.

Somewhere north of Alliance and south of Chadron there are at least two or three tractor junkyards—acres and acres of tractor parts.

Stopped in Alliance, NE to visit Carhenge (see pictures), which turned out to be quite interesting.

Western NE has much more terrain than one would expect, quite beautiful.  Oddly, there are three crosses on top of this bluff.

Finally arrived in Rapid City, SD around 10 pm MDT. Amazing how many little casinos there are, pretty much one on every corner, and they all cash payroll checks (sad).

Only weather to speak of occurred in Westfield and West Springfield, MA where tornadoes occurred (amazing). After a surprisingly good sandwich from Domino’s, we passed out around 12:30 am MDT (yay). This means that, not counting nodding off on the plane, we’ve likely been awake for nearly 42 hours.
